ADHD and Executive Functioning Coaching
For many people with ADHD and executive functioning deficits, the challenges of managing their time, prioritizing their tasks, sustaining focus, and maintaining motivation don’t evaporate when they reach adulthood. In fact, becoming an adult often means that others have less patience for forgetfulness, procrastination, and running late. We will work together, taking your unique cognitive profile and needs into consideration, so that you build systems, identify strategies, and form habits that give you control over your life.
THE Challenge
The challenge of finding a way to manage every aspect of life is significant, and few of us were ever taught how to do it. Many adults have developed unrealistic expectations of themselves, don’t know where to start, and are frustrated by years of feeling unsuccessful balancing their responsibilities. While many self-help books and websites exist to tackle these challenges, support in both personalizing and pacing the adoption of systems and strategies to manage life greatly increases the probability of success.
Tiny habits and the zone of proximal development
We understand that true growth comes not from fast or large changes, but from tiny habits that lead to sustainable change over time. We’ll work with you in what educators call the zone of proximal development – the space between what you can do on your own and what you can do with support – to build your confidence and increase your success week over week.
Individualized coaching can look many ways:
- Creation of environmental supports specific to your lifestyle including morning or evening routines and an ideal weekly schedule
- Identification of planning tools that you’ll stick with; I’m familiar with a range of paper planners, white boards, and apps that support time and to-do list management
- Learning about cognition and neuroscience so that you can understand how your brain works and what you can expect from it
- Long and short-term goal setting that we break down into manageable steps
You would benefit from coaching if…
- …you often feel overwhelmed by what you need to do.
- …you are frequently late to appointments or otherwise lose track of your time.
- …you want to more clearly delineate the boundaries between work time and rest time.
- …you struggle to make progress towards goals that you have had for a while.
- …you lose things often enough that it’s a source of stress.
- …there does not seem to be space in your life for everything you want to do.
