High School Junior with Depression

Home Strategies Case Study

Jack is an 11th grader who recently suffered a depressive episode which led to enrollment in a two week out-patient program.  His teachers are sympathetic, and forgive his frequently late assignments, but his parents worry about his long-term success and want to help him find motivation to stay on top of his work.    We worked together to set up the following:

  • An incentives plan which offers positive reinforcement at home for daily, weekly and quarterly academic performance.
  • Defined steps to shift Jack’s sleep habits from a 3 a.m. bedtime and frequent naps to a bedtime between 10 and 11 p.m.
